My students are fifth and sixth graders who attend a school in a city in Alaska. They are mostly economically disadvantaged and do not have access to motivating books, magazines and technology in the classroom. Most of them have lived in the city all of their lives and have not had much experience outside or in the Lower 48 states. They are in special education, struggle with reading skills and are not motivated to improve or even search for an interesting book. The sample magazine "Action" amazingly motivated my students to read and participate in the reader's theater portion of the publication. I have been using my personal iPad for reading activities, which has also been very motivating for the students.
