My students are a combination of many different cultures and experiences. Predominantly a Somali population, I do teach a variety of English Language Learners. They come to us in school not necessarily being fluent in any one language, and yet are expected to be able to compete at the same level as their grade level peers. Many of my students come from very poor backgrounds, and have little support at home to help them succeed academically. Their lack of fluency in any language makes it difficult for them to learn to read in English, and it frustrates them immensely. They are bright and intelligent students, and yet because of their lack of experience with our language, they feel stupid and distant from their peers. They come to our school hoping to do better, but feeling discouraged the entire way. Our school is 1 of 9 different district schools, one of the largest in the state, and the availability of materials for our students is scarce. Teachers provide most materials themselves.
