We are a highly successful inner-city public high school with a business focus, although many of our students end up aiming at law or medicine. Rather than merely toughen them, surviving the grit of their lives has given them courage and optimism; they are motivated toward success. Most of my 84 seniors are the first in their families to apply for college, but all of them intend to go. Smart and motivated as they are, though, they are totally unfamiliar and often flustered by the number of documents we have to submit as part of the applications for admission and financial aid. The programs for which they are eligible require a lot of documentation, even late into the spring. As students' consciousness rises, they are inspired to apply to colleges even as spring progresses. this creates an unusually high and constant stream of work flowing through the College Office.
