I teach at a public school that serves a population of pregnant teenagers in our county. It is an integration of daycare and school that allows these girls to beat the odds (50% of pregnant teens never finish high school!) The school and classes are small allowing the teachers to place an emphasis on success and hands-on instruction. Many of the students had attendance issues at their prior school and/or came from schools with a high percentage of teacher turnover (which I call worksheet worlds) and they didn't have the opportunity to experience science in action. They deserve that opportunity. These students impress me daily by attending class while trying to be a parent or pregnant with a child. They are trying to beat the odds and not become a statistic. The goal of the teachers and staff here is to help the student finish their high school education, guide them towards college and career choices, and teach them to be the best parents they can be.
