My students are from an inner city high school. They are from many different ethnic backgrounds and range from gifted to mentally challenged. Because of budget cuts, I have more students in each class and less and less money to spend on them. My classroom budget is $400 for the entire school year. Since each class has about 44 students and there are 5 classes, this is a little more than $1 per student which is not enough to purchase more than paint and paper for the year. We have not been able to buy new or decent paint brushes for the last 4 or 5 years. I have many students who are motivated to learn and have been painting and learning many skills this semester. For many of them this may be the first time in their school career that they have had formal art training. It would help to have good materials that would help them improve their skills and not cause them the frustration that the inferior materials can. They will be able to take pride in their work and materials.
