I have 25 second grade students. They are beautiful and creative young souls. However, many of them struggle when it comes to reading fluency and comprehension. Many of them do not have access to books at home. Most come from hard-working single parent homes where meeting basic needs takes precedence over any leisure activities. My kids, because they all belong to my heart, have not discovered the thrill of reading. When a student comes to me and tells me they do not like to read, I am devastated. I am a passionate and avid reader and want my students to know that not only do they need to learn to read to be successful all through their school career, they can read for enjoyment. Read to escape. Read to be inspired. Read to learn a skill or hobby. The possibilities are endless! But I have to get them to want to take that first step! Research has shown using eReaders encourages even the most reluctant of readers to increase reading time. Increasing time improves reading skills.
