Aloha! I teach in the historical town of Ewa; a town rich in history and culture. My interest in "place-based learning" (PBL) has taken my students through many environmental and culturally based adventures. What better way to understand one's place in our world by using our own community, environment, culture and history as our textbook. With PBL, learning also takes place outside the classroom. You'll find many of my students digging for worms in the garden discovering the effect worms have on our environment. Or you may find them mapping out their community in search of historical treasures and relics of the past. Sometimes you'll find them creating an oral history project and interviewing people in our community. Look carefully and you'll find students creating websites and videos advocating the importance of their own place (Ewa). We have so much more "place-based" activities we can do with your help.
