My students are children between three and five years old with moderate to severe special needs who attend a special education preschool. Skills are taught in all areas of development in a highly structured manner both individually and in small group format. Play is an area of development in which each student has a deficit, yet when you combine knowledge with play, children learn. Teaching play skills in a highly structured manner while using commonly known items will help to bridge the gap between what they already know and how to expand their minds into an imaginary world.
