Having many different choices for students with flexible seating, my students will feel empowered and responsible for their work. The different seating options and fidget tools will assist with sensory needs, emotional calming and academic success. These materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help prime my students for learning in all content areas. For example, while I'm teaching a lesson, one of my students may be rolling around on the floor having difficulty maintaining his/her space and needing emotional or mental breaks. The jellyfish stools, Hoki stools and stay-in-place balance balls would benefit this student by providing enough movement to sustain his/her attention. He/she could also choose a fidget tool like Loopeez or spiky rings to engage senses or de-sensitize. For students utilizing chairs, the balance disc seat can be used to enable a little amount of movement to maintain their space and attention to tasks. A Calming Corner with a comfortable and quiet place to sit, various fidget tools and books will enable any of my students to self-soothe and manage their emotions. The stress balls, liquid motion bubblers and Labyrinth book will be used here to help students return to a place of self-control. All of these items will meet the needs of diverse learners and students with special needs. Some of the seating options in this project will specifically meet the needs of students with special needs. Some often need a more enveloping seat to feel comfortable and focused. Often times, these seats are useful for reducing sensory overload. The inflatable sofa would be utilized for this purpose alongside stuffed animals and the 12 piece sensory integration products or Frick Frack Fidgets.
