Imagine a safe haven where learning takes place. My 5th grade students currently attend a K-5 Title I school located in a low income area in Nevada. Over 75% of our population are English Language Learners who are at risk of failing. Our school offers many resources for both students and parents who are illiterate or non proficient English speakers. Aside from everything our school does have to offer, ownership of knowledge is something our students can take home and no one can take it away from them. Using math manipulatives and models offers many benefits such as provided a visual representations of ideas, helping students to know and understand mathematics. Unfortunately, the math manipulatives that the school has available are used for the primary grades; leaving the intermediate grade to "drill and kill" or worksheets. In our class we do fun engaging math activities to learn and understand important math concepts; unfortunately, our fun has been none without manipulatives.
