My students ROCK. They are hard-working, inquisitive, thoughtful, and brilliant freshmen and sophomores at a relatively new public high school in the city, with a focus on college prep and liberal arts. This year, because of budget cuts in our district, there will be about 40 students in each class and not nearly enough supplies to adequately instruct all of them. Our school does a lot with a little; despite huge budget cuts and lay-offs, we have a nearly 100% graduation and college acceptance rate. Our diverse population commutes from all parts of the city. A full 84% of our students are economically disadvantaged, but despite this adversity, our students are some of the most motivated, compassionate, and hardworking individuals I have ever known.
