"Just 8% of kids growing up in low-income communities graduate from college by age 24" (postsecondary.org). I am the Special Education Teacher at a public charter high school in a diverse urban community. My students have Learning Disabilities, AD/HD, and Autism. Despite myriad obstacles, my students can and do go on to 4-year colleges. Still, though they are eager to learn and to prepare for college, they often fear they won't get in, won’t be able to afford school, or won't be good enough once they get there. Grants made possible by generous donors have provided my students access to essential school supplies, high-interest literature, and cutting edge assistive technology; in short, the tools to catch up to their counterparts in wealthy suburban communities. After all, we believe that one day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
