My students and their families have all been in the country for less than three years. As a counselor, I work exclusively with these students to welcome them to the US and also help them to get acclimated to school culture. Our school is an urban public school in California. It has one of the most diverse student bodies including 15% African American, 24% Chinese, and 38% Latino students. Over seventy percent of our students are on free and reduced price lunch which is a federal poverty indicator. In addition, 14% of our students are in Special Education, 38% speak English as their second language, and 19% are newcomers to the country. About 88% of our graduating seniors were accepted into college last year which is a remarkable gain over the rate a decade ago. My expectation is that regardless of when my students entered the US, they will all go on to college and succeed in work and life. My goal is to help them get the resources and support they need to achieve this success, learn English, and thrive as new high school students.
