I teach Advanced Placement English in our small rural high school on the Canadian border in Washington State. Our district serves three very small towns and the surrounding valley farms and foothills. Most of our students are eligible for free/reduced lunch, and many are recent immigrants, primarily from Latin America but also from Russia, the Ukraine, and India. We also serve Native American students from nearby tribal land. In the past decade we have gone from about 90 percent Caucasian to just over 60 percent. Just as important, we are in the midst of a transition from a farm/forest/fishing economy to one that requires a much more educated workforce.
