My students come from challenging backgrounds. The majority of them come from impoverished families struggling to make ends meet while at the same time trying to shield their families from the pitfalls of a rough community. Many of these kids are English Learners. Even so, the teachers at our school have committed ourselves to providing the a top-notch education! Our classrooms are engaging and rigorous despite the budge cuts bestowed upon our school. Last year, I began introducing techniques from Reader's Workshop into the curriculum and saw a 20% increase in my students' proficiency on the state test in reading. My goal is to provide these kids even more opportunities to read.
