I teach a reading class for a diverse group of students in a high poverty school. My classes are predominantly comprised of African American, Hispanic, Special Education, and ESOL students who struggle to acquire the reading skills necessary for students their ages. While they are often labeled as non-readers, they merely struggle to access many middle school texts and are sometimes unmotivated by novels that do not appeal to them.
