I have 22 dual language (English and Spanish speaking) 2nd graders are from a large urban district. 100% of my students receive free and reduced lunch, and they all are learning to speak both English and Spanish fluently. Most of my students come from Spanish speaking immigrant families, and the dual language program seeks to preserve their native language by developing complete fluency (speaking, listening, reading and writing) by 6th grade. They are very hard workers, and excited about being 2nd graders who are fluent in two languages! A few students do not come from Spanish speaking families, but have chosen with their families to work to be bi-literate in English and Spanish.
