I teach in an inner-city high school with a population of roughly 900 students. At least 90% are on free or reduced lunch, living below the poverty level in single-parent households. A majority of my students come to English 10 with a middle school reading level, and often struggle with basic literary skills. These students are high-risk for dropping out before graduation. Still, with these struggles, they seek acceptance and kindness, and really want what all people want: to be understood and to have the opportunity to grow and learn and become better citizens of the world.
