My students are incredibly talented and very sensitive to the educational inequity we have in this nation. The idea that technology is another barrier for them to hurdle is reality for them with limited computer and Internet access at their homes. This limited availability certainly has not stopped my students from engaging in social networking like Facebook and Instagram on mobile devices, but it certainly shapes their relationship with technology in meaningful ways. This process extends into our school, too. Being a vocational school, we have some incredibly well-developed programs that truly prepare our students for a craft of their choosing. As forward-thinking as this may be, I still need to impart on my students a love and respect for English and, more generally, the humanities. Students need to come away from my classroom understanding that English can be just as well respected as any of the more specified classes they take through equal availability.
