Our school is 91% Hispanic and over 85% free and reduced lunch. The neighborhoods surrounding our school are poverty-stricken, but the students are bright, strong, and full of potential. Some of my students have faced homelessness; others have had family members and friends in prison or murdered. Additionally, many students work part-time or full-time on top of attending school everyday. Although many of their lives have been beyond difficult, they want to learn and to be successful and are working harder than ever to fulfill their dreams. Only 8% of our students currently go to and through college; The ACT average is currently a 17. This is our chance to begin turning it around!
