My students come from a high poverty inner city neighborhood and they have incredible stories to tell. With their stories, they can immediately connect to texts that deal with trauma, violence, and discrimination. We are a Title I school in California lacking basic supplies - Many of our students don't even have pencils to bring to class every day. Despite this, however, our students understand the importance of reading and are eager to boost their reading levels and master the necessary standards, but often are frustrated by the stories in the textbook that they find irrelevant or too hard.
