The students I teach attend a high school in a county school system in rural Alabama that currently has no organized recycling efforts. Although some of these students have a basic understanding of recycling, they really do not comprehend how it can impact local, national, and global communties. I believe the opportunity is here not only to educate the students on recycling and conservation, but to bring them into a global community that understands how important it is to conserve the resources we have on Earth. These students realize that a city and a community must work together in order to preserve what they have, but sometimes it can be difficult for them to find ways to serve their community. By implementing a recycling plan, they would be contributing to the sustainability of their community and would be learning valuable lessons on conservation they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
