I teach 8th grade Reading (standard level) at a public school in Florida. My students come from a range of backgrounds, but include many students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. At my school, we are working tirelessly to help our students. We want to get each of them on a college track and prepare each and every one of them to be productive citizens in our society. With our world more connected than ever, creating college track students and productive citizens must include exposure to other parts of the world. Because my school is in a small town and because many of them have limited home resources, my students rarely have opportunities to experience different countries and cultures. So, I am working to expose them through the literature we read in my classroom.
