My students live in one of the top ten poverty-stricken cities in America. Often no one wakes them in the morning or gives them breakfast. So they have learned at a very young age that they must "do" for themselves. A lot of my third-graders are also responsible for getting their younger siblings ready for school. After school most have no one to read to them or to help them with homework. In spite of all this, the majority of my students possess a fierce desire to do well. They want to master all of the subjects and thoroughly enjoy showing off their skills. They are bright, enthusiastic, and creative, just like students in other more affluent areas. I am constantly inspired by them and both amazed and humbled by their resilience. These children are incredibly easy to love.
