Our school is a Title I school and all of my students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. At the beginning of the year I assign a reading long. My students are asked to read at least 30 minutes every night. They understand they must read independently to grow their reading levels. The problem is that many students do not have access to books at home and no way to get to a public library. Most of my students require reading intervention and are far below grade level. My students are bright, loyal and driven to improve their reading levels. They just need the right tools and encouragement to get them there. As a class, we envision our future goals everyday and we know graduating from college is essential to achieving those goals. Our big goal is to finish the year ready to be advanced 5th graders on the path to college.
