The students who will be reading this book are sixth grade, inner-city students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The students in my Literacy program struggle significantly with reading. They have been hand selected by both teachers and administrators to be in my class because of their significantly low CMT standardized test scores. I am hoping that they can read "Freak the Mighty" because it is a high interest story that they will not find frustrating, but will learn many invaluable life lessons from. Furthermore, my students will gain confidence in themselves as they come to realize that they can enjoy literature and that they can easily comprehend what they are reading! Please help us obtain these books! These students cannot afford much, some are unable to get the basic school supplies like a pen or pencil. Being able to give them a brand new book on the first day of school will be something they will greatly appreciate and always remember. Thank you so much!
