The student population I work with on a daily basis is one located in an impoverished urban setting. The school itself is a very old building, but much of the building is not utilized due to underfunding and understaffing. Students often take two to three buses (sometimes riding and transferring on their own at as young as 12) to and from school. Throughout their school careers many have faced inconsistency, poor teaching, and lack of advocacy. Few have truly experienced an inquiry based science education, which is what I seek to provide them. Nonetheless, these students are energetic and enthusiastic when it comes to hands-on learning and visual demonstrations. My students have such high aspirations for their lives, but often lack the support and resources to achieve their goals.
