We are going to be working on a figurative language unit very soon. Becoming Naomi Leon is an amazing story of a young girl searching for her identity and is full of amazing language throughout. In order for my students to get the full learning benefits of this unit, they need the books in front of them. I want them to be able to interact with the text, stop and jot in the text, and search the text for examples of figurative language. There is nothing like getting 'lost' in a good book, but in order to do so, we need the books! 6th grade is a time of figuring out who we are and where we want to be in the world. With this amazing story of a young girl learning about her family and learning more and more about herself every day, I hope to inspire my students to examine their own lives and their own identity. We have a few copies of the text in our building, but not nearly enough for all of my students. In order for them to take ownership of this unit and this story, they need to have the books in their hands. They need to be able to refer to the text in order to make sense of it. I want my EL's and DL's to be able to access a higher level text. During a read aloud, it would be beneficial for my students to be able to follow along with me as I am reading. To challenge all of my students to become better readers they need to have a novel to read! I want my class to have a common text to be able to discuss and refer back to, therefore setting them up for success.
