As an ESL Teacher, I am not provided with a set curriculum like many mainstream teachers. While this allows me the freedom to create all of my own lessons and thematic math units, it also becomes an extremely daunting task with a lack of supplies. 70% of my ELL population is refugees, often with struggling pasts and interrupted learning. Frequently, it is misperceived that math is a universal language, and as a result, many people believe that my ELLs will struggle less in math. On the contrary, many of my students struggle in multiple subject areas as a result of their continuing efforts to improve their English. The academic language in all subject areas, and especially math, pose struggles for my learners. By providing a more hands on, interactive and visually stimulating approach to learning math, I hope to bridge this learning gap.
