My students can switch from speaking English to Spanish as easily as turning on and off the light switch. They take pride in their heritage and they believe in the opportunities their families have fought hard to give them. When they are at home, they are often caretakers for younger brothers and sisters, translators for their parents, and hopeful young adults trying to walk the line between kid desires and grownup responsibilities. Many are two and three grade levels behind in literacy. They are enthusiastic learners who love being read to, especially with voices. When we go on field trips to the city twenty minutes away from our school, many stare at the skyscrapers in amazement because they have never seen them before. Their world is their neighborhood and our school. Through reading, I hope to expand that world.
