A book in the hand of a child is a powerful tool. The best way for students to apply the phonics skills that they have learned is through reading. But the question is, how are they going to find the books that match their specific needs? What if they had instant access to hundreds of books? With the use of tablets in the classroom, they can. With a tablet, my students will be able to read books that are specific to their needs instantly. Through apps such as Kids A-Z, I can assign books that correlate with our phonics lessons and grade specific standards. These tablets will be used during our small reading groups and literacy centers. During small groups, the students will be able to read their assigned book. They can then use the tablet during the literacy center to practice reading the book assigned and practice the phonics skill taught. The phonics and reading practice using the tablets will help increase their ability to sound out words, making them better readers.
