As 5th year 8th grade English teacher, I am still in dire need of books for my students. Something I've learned as essential in my first year of teaching is the importance of connecting to my students' lives. The students who I find most challenging to connect with are my group of at-risk students, due to their academic and behavioral challenges. My students attend a 5th-8th grade school, which means that my classroom library is an important way to supplement enough age-appropriate material, as middle school students tend to gravitate towards books dealing with risky or extreme themes that are not always allowed and/or available at the school library.
