My students need literature that appeals to them. Many are struggling readers or are learning English as a second language. They are not yet able to read a grade level chapter book. When they try, they tend to get very frustrated and shut down. Magazines have an appeal to them because, first of all, they belong to the student. These students don't have books or magazines that are their own, and they would be very appreciative of them. Another appealing facet of magazines is that the articles are shorter and there are bright, bold illustrations, so they don't seem as intimidating to struggling readers.
