The students being served are students with disabilities in the exceptional children's program in a public school in North Carolina. The disabilities range from Specific Learning Disability (SLD), Other Health Impaired (OHI), and Autism (AU). The students in my classroom range from kindergarten to 5th Grade. They are all students who struggle with math and have difficulty with acquiring the skills necessary to be successful in math. The learning styles and needs of special needs children require tactile, visual, and auditory experiences. Children need practice and repetition with the many concepts that are part of pre-reading and early math learning. They gain from working together, guided by a teacher, and yet they also need the leeway to work at their own individual speed and developing skill level. Students will be able to work in multiple modalities (tactile, visual, and auditory) that will motivate them to practice new concepts and enhance their ability to share their thinking.
