I teach Language Arts and Social Studies in grades 7 & 8. My students are both general and special education, our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood. The school became a middle school four years ago and we have been struggling to get grade appropriate materials for our English Language Arts program. Until now, we have only received test prep materials or age appropriate novels that did not support the social studies curriculum. My goal is to get the students into historical fiction, giving them the chance to gain a deeper meaning of Social Studies.
