Music class has grown in about four months from a group of 5 students nervously learning music notation to a group of 20 who most recently performed vocal solos and duets in front of parents, faculty, and each other in the school's first ever talent show. Located in Northeastern Arizona, our school borders the Navajo Nation and primarily serves Navajo students. Our students bring cultural knowledge and tradition to the classroom, though many of them struggle with difficult socioeconomic circumstances. Our school falls under Title I, meaning that the majority of students receive free or reduced lunch. Because of limited resources, our school does not currently have a certified music teacher or class set of instruments. Music club provides students with a much needed outlet for artistic expression, and gives them the opportunity to enrich their education through the teamwork and collaboration that performance provides, but thus far we have had only our voices to make music with.
