Our high school is one of the few inner-city schools in our city that has been brutally nicknamed a "dropout factory." Our student population is so incredibly mobile that many of my students at the end of the year may be completely different from the students I started out with. I am a Special Education English teacher, so my high schoolers have diagnosed learning disorders in either reading or writing and read on average at a 2nd grade level. The majority of my children are either Latin or Black, and have never experienced a positive reading culture before in their lives. Many have not read a book in 7 years, much less interact with books as powerful tools that they can use to grow. If these students do not receive intervention now, they will continue falling increasingly behind.
