My students are the hardest working 5th graders in the country. Their families opted to send them to middle school a year before elementary school technically ends in our district, because in a city characterized by low performing public schools, my kid's parents wanted to send them to a college-prep charter school that values character education as highly as it values literacy and math. My students, 98% of whom are on free and reduced price lunch, attend school from 7:15-4:00 everyday, and once a month come to Saturday school. They spend 90 minutes a day in an English Language Arts classroom, and they take every opportunity to read in the hallway, at lunch, and when they finish their work early. While my school is strongly dedicated to literacy, we lack the funds for a school library; books are available in reading classrooms. My kids deserve access to a wide array of books and genres and I am determined to provide them with choice reading that matches their individual levels and passions.
