My students are a group of lively 4th graders from a rural coastal Georgia public school. They're funny, witty and have a hunger for learning. Unfortunately, many of them are poverty-stricken. They come to school unkempt and without basic supplies. Many receive only two decent meals a day - the two they get at school. They have worries on beyond what a young child should. With regards to reading, most of them read at or slightly below grade level. Most of them are are reluctant to challenge themselves or try to read books that they perceive as difficult, or worse, have been told they can't because it would too hard for them.
