Our preschool class, at a public school in the District of Columbia, consists of 3 year old students. 99% of students in our school are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, making us a Title 1 school. Everyone in our building works hard to provide the best resources for our students at no cost: from transportation to meals to exceptional Early Childhood programming so we can start closing the achievement gap early. Our students have limited resources. Young kids learn through experiences. A 3 year old's scientific knowledge, for example, tends to come from things they've directly experienced: playing with the sand on the beach or splashing around in the backyard pool. Most of our students have not had the resources (such as money, someone to take them there, a reliable means of transportation to travel there, etc) to experience these things.
