My students are residents of rural eastern Arkansas. They attend a charter elementary school that has been open for five years and whose mission is to see them to, and through college. Slightly over 90 percent of the students in our school receive free or reduced lunch. They attend school from 7 am to 4 pm and the majority of that time is spent on math, reading and language arts. They work hard. Many of my students have never left their town, but they have an insatiable curiosity about the world around them. They are creative and gifted in music. Most of them have grown up singing and dancing in church. As they move through our music curriculum, they learn the fundamentals of rhythm, reading music, singing, playing instruments, different styles of music, composers, and world cultures. They love playing complex rhythms and our graduating fourth graders have gone on to middle school reading music and playing the recorder!
