The cardboard shipping box, which contained our animals to dissect (fetal pigs!), had been perched on my desk for the last two weeks, and my students were antsy to open it up. "Tomorrow!" I told them, and my biology class literally erupted in cheers. We were nearing the end of the school year and had been anticipating our fetal pig lab for months. When our dissection day finally arrived, I was thrilled to see the entirety of my class engaged and excitedly discussing the anatomy of the pig. As I looked around the room, I saw students at various stages of their dissection. Some were uncoiling and measuring the length of the intestines, "38 inches!!" Other students were removing the heart, and were observing the tiny atria and ventricles. An adventurous pair of students had removed the top of the skull and were investigating the contents. I was thrilled to see so many excited faces in my science class!
