For too long, education has been equated with filling in the correct answer on a bubble sheet. But real learning occurs when answers aren’t so clear and where ideas from others are shared, questioned, then shaped into larger truths. It is with this in mind that I am asking for funding to attend the NCTE annual convention entitled Spirited Inquiry. My goals for the convention are simple: to be energized with new ideas from the best educators and writers in the country and to transfer those ideas and energy to my students. The convention offers dozens of options for each session, from discovering new ways to help students find meaning in text, to building a usable classroom library, to exploring prevalent social issues and their effects on my students. I am eager to learn new strategies through workshop and collaboration, and I am looking to purchase books written by the speakers to dive deeper into the latest theories and practices. Teaching can be isolating, and it is a common trap to simply do what's been done before. Through my learning at the convention and the resources I'm looking to purchase, I hope to glean fresh insights on the current generation, both how they think and what they need. Ultimately, I plan to shape my future lessons in a way that encourages my students to struggle with difficult text, share ideas courageously, and collaborate with each other to shape their views about text and about life. Because in the end, I want to help my students discover the joy that comes with discovery and inquiry.
