My students are sixth graders who live in an area of low income housing and violence on the streets. They thirst for knowledge and yet seem to have given up on trying to succeed or care because of the many roadblocks before them. They parents work long hours and are often not home. My students are lucky if they have backpacks and pencils but the organizational tools that they need like binders and pencil pouches seem superfluous to their parents. Life is a daily struggle. My school provides both breakfasts and lunches at no cost for every student. We have some programs for gang prevention and weekly food backpacks to help those that are doing worse than others.
