My students are rambunctious, passionate, eager to learn, and intellectually malleable. When provided with the right text, my students transform into ambitious and ardent scholars. The opposite is true for texts in which my students do not emotionally connect. As a teacher, I have seen the best and most empowered versions of my students while reading engaging books. 90% of my students are African American, and 89% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. These kids attend a school that has been slowly on the rise (moving from a grade F to a grade D) over the past five years, but there is still so much room for growth. Unfortunately, my students do not have access to books that are of interest to them.
