My students are juniors and seniors in a suburban public school an hour south of Atlanta. The creative writing course is brand new to our school, and they are willing to explore this adventure with me. Many of them are academically gifted but often under-motivated (the Bart Simpson complex is not uncommon in middle class gifted teens). Although few of them aspire to be writers or English majors, they are critical thinkers who are learning that words have power. They analyze the words of others in traditional literature courses, and now they'd like to craft some of their own powerful, meaningful passages with words instead of music or clay or paint or a stage. I've challenged them to not only learn about themselves but also how their words and ideas affect the world they live in.
