I am a Cross-Categorical Special Education teacher in a large public elementary school. I serve students with a variety of disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, and Learning Disabilities. All of my students are bright and motivated learners; however they also have a variety roadblocks to learning and/or expressing what they know through writing. A student with fine motor difficulties may not be able to hold a pencil to write a story or answer essay questions, but she can dictate a story and print it through an iPad app. Learning disabled students may lack the ability to mentally process the sounds they hear in words. They need special training to learn to process speech sounds and there are many iPad apps that address this as well as apps to teach basic phonics skills. For students with autism, there are apps with scenarios that teach the student to take the perspective of another person-an essential social skill for real world success.
