Our school is located in a beautiful, historic neighborhood near the downtown of our city. Most of my students live in the nearby affordable housing apartments and struggle with high poverty issues. Our school is full of enthusiastic teachers, students and parents who work together to create a thriving community. Because almost all of our families live in poverty we have little financial support from parents. They support their children is other ways, but we rely on outside support from generous donors to help innovate materials coming into our school. I am a Special Education teacher who supports students in primary grade classrooms (K-2). These students have a variety of needs that make school more difficult for them. The support I give helps them be more successful in their classrooms and to master the academic skills they need to catch up with their peers.
