The first grade students I teach in beautiful South Florida are enrolled in what is called the Dual Language Program. I teach for part of the day in English, and I have a co-teacher who teaches them the other part of the day in Spanish. Students enter this program in Kindergarten and will continue it all through elementary school. By the time they reach fifth grade they are proficient students in both languages. Students do not have to come from Hispanic backgrounds to qualify for the program. Although the community I teach in is mostly Hispanic and this program helps to bridge together both their home culture and connect it to their learning in school.
