With entire classes averaging about 15 students, Tekoa school district defines small. Set on the edge of the fabulously wealthy wheat fields of Whitman County, Tekoa is quaint but poor town where students come to a friendly school--their safety zone and place of acceptance. Recently, one of my students showed me a "new" laptop his mom had bought him. It had a cracked screen making it so he had to shrink the display to show only on the good part of the screen. It had an old operating system and numerous bugs, but he was so excited to have it and use it for projects. Many families around here are struggling with the hard economic realities of our times, especially in small towns. I see students every day who have little to eat, little money to buy things with, and simple clothes. But I also see a place where education is valued and students push towards a college education. The school and community here offer a remarkable support system.
